Why are my tomato starts spindly? Peppers and dahlias are growing in the same conditions and look fine. The tomato leaves are not lush, and the lower ones curl and fall off :(

First dahlia seedlings from my future breeding program! These are open pollinated from last year, but I’ll do some intentional crosses this year.

Pretty wild how completely defenseless the entire academic system is to a fascist government.

Finally have my own network so I can set up my Pi-hole again. The web is polluted, essential to fight back, especially when everybody wants a piece of our data to help take away our fundamental rights. Already blocking 18% of all queries 😇 pi-hole.net

The NSF changed my life. Even if you’re an idiot who doesn’t value basic research, for me the path from academia to industry wouldn’t have been possible without their help.

I'm so disappointed my PRFB didn't make the woke Marxist list, everything in academia is so competitive these days 😢 not even an honorable mention 😔

What’s going on at the NSF?????
Still frozen out. We’re getting word that people getting Universities to reach out to NSF over this & broader freeze may put pressure on them & help resolve this. If folks could start contacting their uni admin with complaints to forward to NSF (hopefully you know who to contact) it’d help a lot
To expand on this, right now ~200 postdoc fellows directly funded by NSF are locked out of their salary &research funds right before the first of the month. No doubt other NSF funded grads &postdocs are affected as well. All requests for funds put in before the freeze are slowly being cancelled

I get that the evil plan to destroy academia is to force more scientists into private industry to maximize profits, but industry needs academia too! So many startups are based on fundamental academic research and a foundation of open source research is good for everybody. Amazingly shortsighted.

As if being a postdoc isn't hard enough, truly feeling for the PRFB fellows and anybody else relying on gov research money right now. Also wild how most people have no idea what's going on. Tell your friends!

Torrey pine (Pinus torreyana)! Somewhere around 3,000 left in the wild :( They're so beautiful, maybe because of the coastal hills and cliffs where they grow.

Starting a little tea growing project! If anybody has leads on tea breeding programs for the Pacific Northwest I'd be happy to hear about them! This is Camellia sinensis var. sinensis from a local nursery.

Saving dahlia seeds for the first time! I've never done this before so I'm excited to see what I'll get. I collected dry flowers from 12 varieties. I wasn't around to do manual crosses so they're all open pollinated. Anybody know how often dahlias outcross vs self? Next year I'll do some crosses!

Here's a great idea for the NSF: let's say somebody has a PRFB fellowship, but they get a job and leave early. They should be able to use the remaining funds to pay themselves an hourly rate to finish any outstanding papers. Good for science, good for the fellow, and the money is already there 🌞🌈✨
