Why are my tomato starts spindly? Peppers and dahlias are growing in the same conditions and look fine. The tomato leaves are not lush, and the lower ones curl and fall off :(

Studying up for the next few years.

First dahlia seedlings from my future breeding program! These are open pollinated from last year, but I’ll do some intentional crosses this year.

Finally have my own network so I can set up my Pi-hole again. The web is polluted, essential to fight back, especially when everybody wants a piece of our data to help take away our fundamental rights. Already blocking 18% of all queries 😇 pi-hole.net

Torrey pine (Pinus torreyana)! Somewhere around 3,000 left in the wild :( They're so beautiful, maybe because of the coastal hills and cliffs where they grow.

Starting a little tea growing project! If anybody has leads on tea breeding programs for the Pacific Northwest I'd be happy to hear about them! This is Camellia sinensis var. sinensis from a local nursery.

Saving dahlia seeds for the first time! I've never done this before so I'm excited to see what I'll get. I collected dry flowers from 12 varieties. I wasn't around to do manual crosses so they're all open pollinated. Anybody know how often dahlias outcross vs self? Next year I'll do some crosses!

Great news, my Nepenthes 'Miranda' is flowering for the first time! Less great: it smells like bad meat and I'm having a dinner party tomorrow :/

Nice to work for a company where I can combine visits to HQ with seaside fossilized whale bone viewing.

I've been growing Dahlia imperialis (tree dahlia) for a few years now. I think this is the tallest growth yet, 13 feet! Short days trigger flowering, so it has never flowered before the killing frost here in Washington. A mild fall has it so close this year, we'll see!

It seems like the leaves are more jazzy in the Eastern US forests compared to the West, why is this?

Shortia galacifolia at the Asheville Botanical Garden. Hopefully I’ll see it in the wild at some point!

I had a wild morning in Nebraska today. I had no idea it was Sandhill Crane season, but I happened to be driving along the Platte River right before sunrise and saw one of the most amazing bird sightings of my entire life, many thousands of cranes filling the sky 🥲 Nebraska is pretty cool.

Imagining that this wasn't a typo, and there's a cruise ship out there with more plant species than the New York Botanical Garden.
