Happy to have contributed to this new work by June Choi and other Stanford friends:
New paper looks into "The debt burden of tropical cyclones and climate change"

=> across all TC-exposed countries, debt-to-GDP ratios are on average 30% higher due to the cumulative effects of TCs since 1990, while GDP levels are on average 10% lower

So an odd thing here is that if you say "an unidentified man dressed in a Batman costume" your point is to communicate "it is not really Batman" but the problem is that the real Batman, within the fiction of the comic book "Batman", is also, literally, an unidentified man dressed in a Batman costume
An unidentified man dressed in a Batman costume angrily confronted Santa Clara city officials during a joint meeting of the City Council, city authorities, and the Santa Clara Stadium Authority on Monday, using his public comment to condemn the city’s stance on cooperation with ICE.

Was your train delayed or cancelled this weekend? Mine was. Do you crave research that speaks to this particular experience? Look no further. In a new paper,
@xinmingdu.bsky.social and I quantify how much rail safety and operations are affected by the weather.

“Minnesotans have found and loved one another in a world atomized by social media, where empty men have tried to fill their lonely soul with lies about their own superiority. Minnesotans have preserved everything worthwhile about Western civilization while armed brutes try to tear it down by force.”
Stop what you’re doing and read this piece, which is as powerful as you’d expect from @adamserwer.bsky.social witnessing the events of last week on the ground in Minnesota. “The secret fear of the morally depraved is that virtue is actually common, and that they’re the ones who are alone.”
Minnesota Proved MAGA Wrong
The pushback against ICE exposed a series of mistaken assumptions.

Yeah I think the evidence is just pretty convincing at this point that extreme winter temperatures are warming up/becoming less extreme irrespective of Arctic warming, jet stream meandering, etc

www.science.org/doi/full/10....
Models and observations agree on fewer and milder midlatitude cold extremes even over recent decades of rapid Arctic warming
Midlatitude extreme cold events have decreased in severity and frequency over recent decades, in agreement with models.

Some people say there’s a link between Arctic warming and winter weather but we’re pretty far from the strength of evidence we have for other extremes

Linking Arctic variability and change with extreme winter weather in the United States
Arctic climate change is a likely cause of recent episodes of extreme winter cold in the United States.

New research out today in #ScienceAdvances, in which Kyan Shlipak et al. explore the health impacts of burning wood for heat across the U.S. Of note: ~8600 premature deaths w/ more urban impacts than expected, disproportionate impacts to POC www.science.org/doi/10.1126/... @science.org
Ambient air quality and health impacts of PM2.5 from US residential wood combustion
Air pollution from residential wood burning contributes to thousands of premature deaths annually, with unexpected urban impacts.

Gotcha—let’s dig into that step by step.

1. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗻𝗼 𝗺𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵, because I turned you into an amorphous lump of flesh. You’re not just immobile—you’re immortal, and you feel only anguish.

2. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺. That makes total sense—it’s a natural human impulse, and you’ve been through a lot.
