Happy Public Domain Day 2026!
Each January 1st is Public Domain Day, when a new crop of works have their copyrights expire and become free to share and reuse for any purpose. Here's our highlights for 2026.

Fools and charlatans will tell you 2026 is the semiquincentennial, but really it's the centennial of the greatest, most charismatic socialist this side of the atlantic. Fidel Castro: born August 13th, 1926. Mark your calendars

Dems can win veto-proof majorities and it still won't matter unless they aggressively impeach and prosecute all the ghouls who run this administration. FFS even my centrist dad thinks that we should prosecute and jail every ICE agent. That's the compromise position if you want liberal democracy back
Trump is too inept to be of use to US allies or adversaries while Vance wants to pursue an arrogantly deluded path that turns US allies into more adversaries.

2026 mid-terms look like the last moment through which this slide into self-inflicted American decline can be reversed.

I have the week between Christmas and New Year off thanks to my union (HUCTW), and I absolutely love mandatory no one doing a damn thing time. This should be quarterly.

Six minutes into the audio book about Harry Widener's ghost and the narrator pronounces Houghton "Howton". Devastating

I use it about once every 3 years but I still believe that anyone who ran for president on a single issue platform of "we will Nationalize Ticketmaster" would win in a landslide

Thinking about the cascading failures that lead to a production design decision like this. The English word "flatlined" on a heads up display instead of...flat lines.
*Man, everything is so fucking literal. What happened to subtlety?"*
> The word "Flatlined" on the monitor

Archivists/librarians please share the coolest thing in your collections that will never be digitized.
I live in the heart of California gold country. One of the richest mines ever in CA is nearby. Opened circa 1860 closed 1942. A local foundation has preserved the records on site. I know not a stitch has been digitized and am confident no more than 2 pro historians have ever been in there.

Eternal Sunshine did not consider Bari Weiss
it’s so annoying that i have to know what so many stupid incurious and hateful bigoted people are up to all the time. i shouldn’t even have to know what a “bari weiss” is.

One Battle After Another was p good. I still feel like none of these screenwriters ever get the ideological commitment in there though.

We need an international standard for what counts as an IKEA "Hack." Two ends of the spectrum:
1. If it requires the use of power tools it is not a hack, that's just carpentry
2. You have to be using the product off-label. No "put the kallax here to make a sleeping zone" that's interior design

Called the university health plan benefits office to see if I could get an appointment faster by changing my PCP and the woman apologized before telling me--in an impeccable townie accent--that I was "trying to mickey the system" and had to be careful to change back to avoid denials. No notes

The democratic establishment has also been happy to blockade Cuba for 65 years, launch hundreds of failed plots at regime change, and cut Cubans off from the global banking system, all because their socialist government dares to provide for its people instead of accepting US imperialism.
I hate to be such a bummer but this is no different from the established Democratic approach to Venezuela (and, you know, dozens of other countries), except insofar as he’s more open about it. They all support regime change and think it’s our right to engage in imperialism all over the world
