I agree with Jay’s takes in this thread. But because I’m a jerk, I do think editors should know how to flat, color, ink, letter, write, and most importantly retouch (manga specific), even if they aren’t good.
I can’t make a request if I don’t know the process of what I’m asking. Shadowbox first.
You don't need to be *able* to do every stage of comic creation and production as an editor, but you do need to understand intimately how each stage happens and the role it plays in what readers will ultimately see.

It's almost 2026 but latest trend in Portland bar design is rooted firmly in the Nixon administration. My latest for @eater.bsky.social

I'm sorry to say I also do the same thing! Also realized recently that I have that Matthew Clark tendency to draw the whole building, then demolish parts of it.😬

Due to my Godzilla vs Portland story, I've been thinking a lot about what makes Portland, well, Portland. I think Ben really hits the nail on the head here, and it's a moving read.
The one thing Portland has are the people who live here. Creative, eclectic, fiercely independent people who came out west to get away from the pomp and pretense of older, better run places. The people of this city make what they want to make, and help each other where they can.
A Moment in a Coffee Shop
This time last year I was sitting in a quiet cafe trying to decide if Portland was any different from anywhere else. This was one of those eclectic, slightly hippie-ish coffee shops that used to be mo...

I'm sorry friend!

Look, I don't need fancy Godzilla to ruin Portland. My own clumsiness will get us there just fine!

Trying so hard to finally get some inking done before Christmas that I was willing to fight through my brush pen dumping rivers of ink with every line. Until I stuck my hand in it and smeared it across the entire panel, ruining it completely.
Noted.
No work is getting done today.

Wow, geez. Yeah, my letter doesn't even recommend additional scanning. It basically just says " You have dense breast tissue so we might have missed something, lol!"
Will definitely look into this ultrasound business.

I have never once been offered that, even though every year after my mammogram I get a letter explaining I have dense breast tissue. I feel cheated! Maybe it's not covered for me and that's why?

Super handy!
How I make a THUMB BOOK! Thumb books are used for comic thumbnail sketches, I make my own to adjust for pages needed for whatever project I’m working on.

You can use whatever paper you have. I also like to make my thumb books COLORFUL!

Happy comic-ing, y’all! Show me what you create!

Not gonna lie, a little worried I'll get my wires crossed. But also I've been at the Japanese for 30 years so hopefully I can keep it compartmentalized!
December 20, 2025 at 1:42 AM
I'm not trying to learn characters, honestly. I just want to talk to my in-laws!
If I pick up a few, hurrah! But I'm jamming on them in my Japanese studies and for now that's enough.

Cantonese update: I am too motivated to be deterred by the idea of sucking at it, as it turns out.
Actually kind of enjoying speaking shakily and working to get it right.
Also surprisingly really enjoying sharing the experience with my husband since we both love talking about language anyway.
December 18, 2025 at 8:43 PM
I'm sorry!! That's the worst.😔
December 18, 2025 at 8:09 PM
They don't as far as I'm aware. Mandarin is China's "official language" so it's very difficult to find a mainstream program that offers Cantonese. Which is definitely part of what's been holding me back.😔
December 17, 2025 at 4:06 AM
Also I hate to look like an idiot in front of my husband, so stumbling through beginner language woes with him is gonna feel great!
It's hard enough for me to find the confidence to speak Japanese, and I've been studying that for 30 years! I am doomed.
