I've collated some data from UCAS for the top 25-ish universities that our students (from the Hull area) progress to to study STEM subjects, comparing the published entry criteria, the most common grade profile for students currently on the course, and the lowest grades of a student on the course...

In #MathsToday pupils vote which of these were equivalent to the original expression. 1 vote Mario, 15 votes Luigi, 1 vote Bowser and 20 votes Peaches. One pupil explained she voted for Peaches because she just knew you multiply. So we then looked at it expanded and why multiplying works.

Year 11 moved onto Trigonometry again, so to start we need to recap last year's work so used this very nice mixed exercise from Dr Austin.

Started Surds off with the year 10 with a challenge to write each number as a product of a square number and an integer. Led on nicely to introduce how to simplify Surds.

spent last week thrashing out expanding brackets with a grid/area model last week with grade 1-3 yr 10s, felt like I was going nowhere fast and encountering lots of difficulties.

This morning did reverse process to factorise with same model. Insane success rate.

Had my interactive whiteboard stop working for half the lesson. The second half wasn't interactive but at least they could see questions. Thank god for textbooks
Half a lesson of indices practice textbook then half on fractional powers on the board.

In #MathsToday I taught both my classes how to find and prove Points of Inflection and we even had enough time to differentiate sinx from first principles ahead of diving deeper into Differentiation tomorrow. #ALevelMaths

Been teaching Quadratic Inequalities and Trig Graphs to my year 11s recently so put this together for them as a challenge!

Will also give it to my year 12s and see how they do...

I love breaking the unspoken rule about fraction diagrams (all pieces congruent, not just equal in area). Here are a few of my favourite non-standard representations. A one radian sector fills half the unit square, the curves y = x² and y = √x enclose 1/3 of the square. Can you come up with more?

Year 10 simplified algebraic fractions, looked at the main worksheet and went... They need more scaffolding before they do that.

In #MathsToday (actually Friday) I gave my year 12 students a question from 1961 which I found in book my colleague found in a charity shop.

They were loving it. Plus I was loving the discussion on how one would solve it using numerical methods without a calculator.

Lovely #oracy work on indices in #MathsToday. We haven't covered negative indices yet but this got them pondering negative indices and considering non integer values for a and b as well as 0 and 1. Looking forward to delving deeper next lesson.

Can recommend using the website for an extra curricular. Its layout is fun and the resources are ideally scaffolded to allow them do most of the exploring themselves.

Y13 did their first set of integration looky-likeys in #MathsToday. Looking forward to lots more of this in the next few weeks!

The last one was a bit mean (I put it there to slow down the fast finishers) but they did manage it when I gave them the right substitution. #ALevelMaths

Introduced my Year 7s to solving equations this week. Made a worksheet to focus on the single skill of identifying the inverse operation for each one-step equation. It also got students used to writing the operation on BOTH sides.
