A preacher gets up, quotes scripture, and reminds the congregation that God loves the outcast — those in fear for their lives — the poor, prisoners, the disabled, and the oppressed.

In response, an outraged mob tries to kill the preacher.

Is this the New Testament or The Washington Post?

What about those who don't go along with the mob?

Remember: Almost all of us are the descendants of immigrants who fled persecution, or were brought to America under duress, or sought better lives for themselves and their descendants.

Politicians who stoke fear and hatred over immigration want you to forget this.

Do not.

If you’re upset by a woman prophetically speaking truth to power, allow me to introduce you to Jesus’ mom:

“God has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. God has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty.” -Luke 1:52-53

I woke up praying for #BishopBudde and all who stand to preach a message of hope, grace, mercy, and love in an environment where those things are demonized. Bishop, I don't know if you'll ever see this, but you encouraged so many people this week. God is well pleased with you.

No one is OK right now.

At least, no one with working empathy and a knowledge of History who’s paying attention.

It's OK if You're Not Ok. No One Who's Paying Attention Right Now, is.
“How are you?” I asked my dear friend Julie, as she fell down into her chair across from me with a loud exhale.

Remember:

It can be sad. It can be tragic. It can be disgusting and depressing and discouraging.

But it doesn’t have to mean this is who we are now. It’s what our country is doing right now and that’s not the same as who we are.

Who we are isn’t up to him.

Breathe in hope.
Breathe out despair.
Breathe in love.
Breathe out hate.
Breathe in grace.
Breathe out vengeance.

Today, I breathe in the Holy Spirit. I better understand the hope the Hebrew people had for an earthly Messiah, and I remind myself that our Savior is alive + reigns above.

‘Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.’ — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

On #MLKDay, we honor his legacy by choosing love over hate, justice over injustice, and hope over fear.
