🧵A stark warning from the National Churches Trust: 1 in 20 churches say they'll probably or definitely not be used for worship in 5 years.

That's hundreds of historic buildings which are community anchors, architectural gems and living heritage, all facing an uncertain future.

Remember, remember the 5th of November,
gunpowder, treason and plot...

The day Guy Fawkes tried to blow up The House Of Lords.

Even though it's a different structure now, having been rebuilt after a fire in 1834, it's still a good excuse to highlight this impressive historic building! 🏦

Happy birthday to this London landmark. 🎉
Happy 60th Birthday to the BT Tower!

Built 1961-65 to the designs of Eric Bedford, Chief Architect at the Ministry of Public Works, the 582ft telecommunications tower is one of Britain's most distinctive post-war buildings and after being sold in 2024, is set to be converted to a destination hotel.

Iconic is certainly an acceptable term for this wonderful and rare building! ⛪
Iconic is a word that is definitely overused but in the case of the Piece Hall in Halifax that is not the case. Built in 1775-9, it is a rare surviving example of a large-scale, purpose-built cloth hall. Historic England has praised its architectural and historical interest

There are quite a few pubs vying for the top spot of London's oldest public house. But, after digging into their history, it turns out only two can back it up with evidence. 🍺
Historic England's interesting blog reveals all here:

It seems to be this week's historical building theme - tin tabernacle churches. This time, the church is in Scotland and, if you have the funds and inclination, you can buy it as it's up for sale! ⛪

#churches #historicbuildings #scotland
The Former Free Church in Skerray has gone on the market. It's a little "tin tabernacle" church, constructed by the local Free Church congregation in 1903 after they left their building in Strathy when it became a United Free Church.

SAVE's Building of the Month deserves a mention.

Increasingly rare, this is a charming, unlisted late 19th-century tin church, nestled in woodland in Sherfield English, Hampshire, just waiting for a new job. Let's hope it finds one soon! ⛪

Our director JT visited Wells Cathedral with Cliveden Conservation and Nick Cox Architects. Pioneering mortar repairs carried out in the 80s and 90s were found to have faired really well, but much of the sculpture needs further repairs.

We're not biased (being a Wiltshire-based business) but Salisbury Cathedral is something special! ⛪

Built entirely in the Early English Gothic style in just 38 years, @salisburycathedral.bsky.social has the tallest spire in the UK, the best preserved Magna Carta, the world’s oldest working clock and the largest and earliest set of quire stalls in Britain.

Gasholders!
Industrial landmarks or eyesores in need of demolition? Love them or hate them, they are very much part of our landscape.

Sometimes they even give us a sci-fi moment, as these Hilsea horton spheres did in 1967, when testing their emergency cooling system. ©IGEM
