Canada works differently than the US, there is not a lot he can do on the issue. Alberta and NB both passed some anti-trans legislation while Trudeau was PM and he was very vocally pro trans.

From what I read about the exchange he was asked how many genders there were and he replied that there are "2 sexes".
He handled the moment well enough I think.
It's a trap question intended to generate a soundbite, a supportive or non supportive answer would have been used against him.

We avoided having our own version of Trump, far right populism and social conservatism.
So far on LGBT issues he's been alright.
