Captain Sidecar

Mostly unfunded retiree. Collector of cats, dogs, and non-functional workshop equipment. Likes toy trains, motorbikes, fried food, and sniffing nitromethane. Broadly left. Intolerant of wankers of any stripe. Holds grudges for decades. Blocks for AI use
At least it'll hopefully make him shut the fuck up so I can enjoy the genuinely funny early days of Dilbert again.

I'm not convinced that the annexation of even a small country, a significant %age of whose population is *very* good at hunting things in freezing darkness, will be quite the cakewalk that might be expected.

TBH, Aus police nicking people on the basis of "I don't like that" has been pretty standard procedure for ever.

It's probably about time to ignore what the US is doing regarding uptake/sales figures, as they're an increasingly isolated outlier, and vastly outweighed by the rest of the world's markets.
January 7, 2026 at 7:05 AM
As it turned out, the foundational checks and balances of US democracy were 1) Assume that people seeking office won't be evil cunts, and 2) Assume that a majority of the voting population won't be stupid cunts. Frankly, it's amazing it lasted as long as it did.

I'm pretty sure he also doesn't understand how Arctic warfare is likely to work either.
January 7, 2026 at 6:51 AM
As a lifelong VRU who's been around the block a few times, my expectations are low. Best case is that AVs attempt to kill me in a logically predictable manner, rather than the myriad, thrillingly random ways that human drivers come up with.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
January 7, 2026 at 6:00 AM
Anecdotally, I've certainly seen evidence of a RW push to discredit the Australian electoral process, largely lifted direct from the US.

...tasks can be done better by more specialised robots. A robot sitting at a bench assembling electronics, for example, doesn't need legs but might be better with extra arms/hands. A robot intended to climb around a building under construction might be better configured as a spider.
January 6, 2026 at 12:09 PM
Yes, but the stupidity lies not in whether the robots are functional, but that humanoid is a very inefficient shape for any kind of production task. Even if we can get robots to the level of dexterity and flexibility that currently requires a human (doubtful but not impossible), most specialised...

If you think that was dark, I highly recommend finding a copy of the specifically kids series The Changes, broadcast in early 1975. I don't hint I slept properly for the rest of the decade.

I am (probably naively) optimistic that the senior generals, who are, by and large, not stupid people, whatever else they may be, may have quietly replaced the real thing with the Fisher Price rendition.

It probably didn't help that, in its native UK, it occupied the mid-Monday evening TV slot, which tended to be a bit of a viewing graveyard.
January 6, 2026 at 5:54 AM
Well, at least it appears to have happened under a sports field rather than anything actually useful.

I remain of the opinion that Blake's 7 was, and is, massively underrated.
January 6, 2026 at 4:34 AM
I think I'll be passing on that thanks. It's taken me 42 years to get the experience (mostly) out of my head. I'm cautious about any possibility of letting it back in.

Probably better to vanishingly him into an ICE facility and then lose him in the system. Kicking him out will just let him continue being a spoiled rich cunt elsewhere.

I tend to regard the high number of religious conversions amongst those recovering from mental illness or addiction as evidence of evangelists seeking out and preying upon the vulnerable.

I have removed aftermarket alarm/immobiliser systems from a number of vehicles now, and every single one was either a breakdown or a fire in waiting. Ditto "professionally" fitted stereos.

January 6, 2026 at 3:32 AM
Frankly, this is as stupid a goal as it was when Elron announced it for Tesla.
January 6, 2026 at 2:09 AM
I lump it into the same basket as denoting "Italy" by having the same 2 Fiat 500s continually going past in the background. Maybe with added Vespa if anyone on the crew can ride one.
January 6, 2026 at 1:59 AM
Well, it's not a chop, so...
January 6, 2026 at 1:24 AM
Only surprising if you're a previously gullible idiot.
