“Well, Doctor, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?"

“A Russian zombie state, if you can keep it.”
Today is like Christmas for me; I only get to use this meme once a year. Giddy with anticipation in the days leading up to the 11th of November.

In a rare case of Substack notes usefulness, I just learned that Sarah Kendzior (author of They Knew and a brilliant writer) got bounced from Bluesky. What the hell? new @sarahkendzior.bsky.social

Everyone finally learning what a controlled opposition looks like. Hint: the exact amount of senators needed to break a filibuster, each of them in a safe seat, don’t just roll on you out of the blue.

They have never been on our side.

First openly gay person to be elected governor in the United States breaths a sigh of relief that fascism isn’t coming for him yet. Colorado’s immigrants weren’t so lucky after Jared invited ICE to come snatch them off our streets though.

Let’s wash all these hypocrites away next year.
Today’s Supreme Court decision not to hear a case banning gay marriage reaffirms that love is love. We are building a Colorado for all and will continue fighting to ensure equality under the law. 🏳️‍🌈

Loved it
I'm 65 and haven't really been in touch with the popular music scene for the past 20 years – but the 'confusing' dialogue between Charlie XCX and Lorde piqued my interest. Now I'm posting her just dropped collaboration with John Cale, of all people, because it's damned good!

Controlled opposition 101
Momentum is a real thing.

Democrats finally had some, after massive turnouts for #NoKings and resounding wins in both red and blue states last week.

The majority of the country, rightfully so, held Trump and the GOP accountable for the government shutdown.

Since January, Trump's Treasury has quietly gutted enforcement of the corporate alternative minimum tax — a huge boon for big business and wealthy investors.

Meanwhile, he's led an all-out assault on Medicaid, SNAP, and other programs that help the poor.

Reverse Robin Hood.

You are not required to respect anyone or anything that does not respect you. Not only is that especially true for presidents and uniforms, it is our civic duty to rise in opposition to them when they do not.
Exactly right. Why should we respect a president who doesn’t respect the constitution he swore an oath to uphold?

Some hard truth: We are all accustomed to being commodified, bartered, gouged & discarded. We have been for generations. The only way we are ever going to get universal health care is for millions to be tossed off of for-profit health insurance. The ACA was always compromise to save that system.

Senator Murphy says there is no sugarcoating, no spin just honesty and resolve. He fears that Trump gets stronger, not weaker, because of this acquiescence. He’s angry too but anger isn’t enough. We’ve got to keep fighting for democracy!

Corruption and normalcy bias are synonyms now
I wrote about the "Appeasement Eight" Senate Democrats getting the party to fold to Trump in the government shutdown, and why it shows that pro-democracy Americans badly need a real opposition party, full of leaders who recognize the United States isn't a normal rule of law democracy anymore.
Democrats Have to Get Out of a Normal Democracy Mindset
By folding in the government shutdown in exchange for virtually nothing, eight Democratic senators aid Trump's authoritarian takeover rather than oppose it

Reminder that this guy was HRC’s running mate. Just as Joe Lieberman was Gore’s.

This party has a long, rich tradition of stabbing us in the back. We need to stop blaming the people who are fed up with them for not voting for them. We’re all better off if we replace them.

This is the message of a failed, feckless, and leaderless party. We need a party with backbone, and the only path to it is through a cleansing primary season. If your Dem is up for reelection, and you aren't damn sure they're fighting the fascists with everything they've got, primary the bastard.
