The factional grifters will hate this, but the Mamdani-Spanberger-Sherrill axis actually suggests the outlines of a broad, emerging Dem coalition organized around both anti-Trump *and* affordability politics, not a party bitterly divided against itself.
These big wins will embolden Dems to take on Trump's lawbreaking and show there's a price for GOP enabling of him. Folks hate to hear this, but normal patterns are asserting themselves: Liberalism isn't dead, Rs are likely to lose in 2026, and Trump is really unpopular, not a magical exception.

Right wing billionaires should clearly fund more sci-fi.
There are many good science fiction novels. Not a single one that I have read delivers a happy vision of the future in which aged right-wing billionaires control the media.

Thought about scientific consensus recently? We have a new DP @i4replication.bsky.social that probes into the famous replication debate between Acemoglu, Johnson & Robinson (AJR) and Albouy - and how experts assess this debate. We find that they disagree. 1/8 www.econstor.eu/bitstream/10...

Worth a friendly reminder that the next set of nation-wide No Kings protests are set for October 18th.

There's probably one in your area.

I am not generally a crowds or protests sort of person, but there's one in my town and I'll be at it on the 18th.

One way to address the "its not always sunny or windy" oil and gas disinfo
Clean energy developers are in the early stages of trying to link North America with Europe via a 6GW 4,000km cable

The UK could wake up w electricity from Canada’s hydropower, and send power back when it’s windy at midnight in North Sea and New Yorkers are making dinner

This seems bad. People unironically calling this their Reichstag Fire moment. 🚩
These are calls for mass political violence, against all Democrats. They openly call for the bombing of "Democrat" cities and for the jailing or killing of Democratic politicians. They are from some of the most influential voices in right-wing politics. Will anyone say anything?

Clearly we're in a new normal. Open question - do we know yet whether the new normal is more like 2020/21 or more like 2023? I suspect the latter, since Canada is so darn big & it keeps burning. /end

It’d be nice if night lights worked for accurately predicting GDP changes, but our best models (with many predictors) explain 60%. Given the LED mess and that lagged BLS data are top predictors, a biased BLS might still be better. Plus, you’re swapping dependency on the BLS for NASA.
So when are we starting to monitor US GDP with nightlights?
Okay, *now you can start to worry about data being manipulated.

No no no, you are ~neoclassical~ by tautology. You think humans are robots, and capital and labor are endlessly substitutable for natural resources. Keep your Dobb Couglas production functions away from innocent childens' eyes!
Personally I find this kind of "review" quite unhelpful and misleading. Economics teaching of environmental issues (climate, biodiversity, pollution etc) has expanded a lot in recent decades. There's huge interest from students and on the research side the environment field keeps growing rapidly. 📈📉
Economics teaching has become the Aeroflot of ideas
The discipline is failing students by ignoring the biggest social, political and ecological challenges facing the world today
