Is not what was happening. The Democrats haven't wanted to stop the GOP but just were too feckless to do it. The Democrats fundamentally agree with the GOP and chose not to fight. When Dems do fight (the left) they have teeth.

Well-off liberals still, to this day, think that you can get rid of fascism with ridicule, clever takes, and refusing to pay attention to them. But those are rules for the boogeyman, not for real monsters. With real monsters, the only way to handle them is head on. Or head off, as it were.
