The Dems sabotaged public trust. Poll after poll suggested most of the blame was on Trump. Last week’s elections suggested the shutdown was a legitimate resistance to illegitimate rule. Pressure was mounting. Rs were sweating. Trump was calling for the end of the filibuster. Then Schumer caved.

Even if the Senate holds that vote,
the House doesn’t have to take it up.
The last 40 days of pain were starting
to hurt Trump & the GOP politically.
With that pressure gone,
working families will pay the price.
Schumer didn’t want this deal,
but he couldn’t hold his caucus together.
That’s on him./

Some thoughts on the CR/minibus.

1 The Dems negotiating with Rs were not freelancing. They coordinated with Sen Schumer. A few were ready to give in on day one, others worked to maximize appropriations wins.

Those voting for the 'deal' are the ones furthest away from electoral consequences.

3. Republicans were playing good cop, bad cop, crazy cop.

Good cop: Senate Republicans
Bad cop: House Republicans (Johnson)
Crazy cop: Russ Vought + Trump

Vought's plan was always to use impoundment/rescissions/starving people + firing feds to force Dems to surrender on the power of the purse.

NEW: Dems easily flipped the sheriff's office in Pennsylvania's Bucks County, a big swing county in the Philly suburbs.

So? The incumbent GOP sheriff had contracted with ICE. His Dem challenger promised to end the contract.

Now he wants other swing-state Dems to look at his victory as a lesson:

A populous, swing county replaced its GOP sheriff on Tuesday after months of controversy over his joining ICE’s 287(g) program. The Democratic winner promises he’ll end the contract.

This isn’t about left vs. right.

This is about fighting back vs. losing.

The regime’s threats are too real and the stakes are too high to settle for the feckless, loser version of the Democratic Party we saw this week. In this moment when fascists are on the march, we need leadership with a spine.
Democratic leaders have failed us again. It's time to get new leaders.
After yet another capitulation by Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats, it's clear we need new leadership capable of mounting a serious opposition to Trump's authoritarian regime. We're launching our la...

The harm caused by the shutdown was real, affecting millions, and no one should downplay that. But America is not in a situation of harm or no harm. Rapidly backsliding into authoritarianism, America is in a terrible situation where appeasement trades short-term relief for more long-term harm.

Today, Lawfare is launching a new project–which includes a tracker and a map–to follow where and how the military is being domestically deployed.
