This was a lovely surprise and honour, to receive the 2025 Marsh Award for Ornithology from the British Trust for Ornithology @btobirds.bsky.social, at this evening’s opening of the Society of Wildlife Artists’ annual exhibition.
The Marsh Award for Ornithology goes to Dr. Rob Thomas! @robthomasbirds.bsky.social has made a huge contribution to ornithology through academic research, teaching & mentorship that’s inspired generations of students. He’s also published a monograph on the Storm-petrels. @marshawards.bsky.social

Heather's contribution to ornithology and BTO surveys has been incredible across Wales! Thank you Heather! A well-deserved recipient of the Jubilee Medal. 🏅
The winner of the Jubilee Medal is Heather Coats! Heather’s support to BTO has been outstanding, including her surveying for @bbs-birds.bsky.social (she’s one of four people in Wales to have surveyed a square every year) & her dedication to bird ringing led her to co-found the Gower Ringing Group.

The Winter Bird Survey has started! Huge thanks to all volunteer surveyors. You can find out more about the survey here: www.bto.org/get-involved...
Before the rain arrived, first visit to my two @btobirds.bsky.social Winter Bird Survey squares above Conwy, which I otherwise rarely visit outside the breeding season.

Quite a few Chiffchaffs and Blackcaps still around, Robin winter territories galore, and several Choughs foraging on the mountain.

Great to see Nightjar recorded for the Heathland Birds Survey in Wales! It's the last chance to survey for this species this month, can you help fill vacant sites near you? Take a look: www.bto.org/get-involved... #birdingwales
Visit 2 of one of my Nightjar survey sq for @btobirds.bsky.social was fruitful. I did contain my excitement but gasped when a Nightjar flew quite close over my head & landed on the path. Another wing-clapped in flight. In total I had at least 4 males in that square & some midges! #birdingwales
