Fantastic new article in @ejir.bsky.social from @minseonku.bsky.social !!
The season of Western multilateral summitry (G7, NATO) may be over, but the diplomatic show must go on.
In this @ejir.bsky.social piece, I argue that summitry is a performance producing what I call the "social international," or the intl system of state persons

Real talk: US liberals have put forward no vision of the future besides t+1.
This is actually a very good question because liberal foreign policy in the future can no longer assume the degree of continuity after elections required to do most of the stuff we want to do. The best plan I’ve got for the future is idk bro.
it is hard to tell what america IS, america contains a lot of things and a bunch of them are good, where do you go from saying this is who we are?

Nice summary of the need for a positive, aspirational vision of the future vs. the demotivational effects of only articulating futures that must be avoided.
Strongly agree. Or even a vision of utopia! The opposite of doom! What does success, and a bright future look like?
Something in this ... if social democrats want to win the culture war, they need to start offering something big and weird and maybe even kinda mental when it comes to how they talk about the future

We argue for broadening the scope of audience agency theorized in securitization by bringing in the ontological security lens, centering the importance of routines. www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

Me ahead of the National Assembly’s voting on Yoon’s impeachment motion later. The motion will pass but the Constitutional Court’s decision is going to cause another six months of stress.

Even setting aside all other objections to this BS, it is pretty hilarious that the linked report shows the public has a much more negative view of how Trump has handled his two transitions compared to the transitions of Biden, Obama, Bush, and Clinton.

In a piece co-authored w/ @briantfinch.bsky.social forthcoming at @risjnl.bsky.social we conceptualize ontological agency or the prioritization of daily routines in the face of reminders of insecurity. We offer one way of understanding SKoreans’ alleged indifference to security threats.

This may not seem politically significant but the ontological security lens is instructive when understanding when and how SKoreans’ latent anxiety shaped by their collective experience of war with NKorea and decades of authoritarianism manifests as overt (re)action.
