Just finished screening The Hottest August (Brett Story, 2019) as the first film for my ecocinema class and goddamn that's a great movie. This is the fourth(?) time I've seen it and each time it gets better and better--more alive, and more urgent. Hope the students felt the same.

An antisemite shot two kids in Colorado, at least one of whom is Jewish.

The White House “fighting antisemitism” doesn’t care, because the shooter was a student radicalized online into far right beliefs, which the regime is cool with, rather than a student verbally criticizing Israeli govt policy.
‘Radicalized’ Evergreen High School shooter appeared to hold antisemitic, violent views in online accounts
Social media accounts that appear to be connected to the 16-year-old shooter are littered with references to mass shootings and antisemitic views, The Denver Post found.

This session alone, 10 states have tried or are currently trying to classify having an abortion as homicide. In most of these states, individuals found guilty of murder can be eligible for the death penalty. Whether these bills pass immediately isn't the point—it's about shifting the Overton window:

Legal experts warn that whether or not these bills pass, they shift the Overton window and prime us to eventually accept what may be unthinkable right now.

read a biography today of a major art critic and museum director from the 1930s who was also a member of something called the "Vigilance Committee of anti-fascist intellectuals". Meanwhile to be a careerist in our own era is to demonstrate cowardice and be rewarded for it.

There's a lot of confusion swirling so it may help to explain that the below is actually fairly normal following an ICE arrest. ICE often transfers people to the deep South where some of the largest detention centers are located, and the ICE Detainee Locator system can take up to 24 hours to update.
Until last night, the ICE detainee locator stated Khalil was at Elizabeth, NJ—even though his wife had been unable to find him there yesterday. This morning, his location has been updated to Jena — a very remote, GEO group-run facility in the middle of rural Louisiana.

We have to stand together for Mahmoud Khalil; liberal, leftist, Never Trump conservatives if we can get them; or we're all dead

Do people get this? It does not matter what your stance on the Gaza protests are/were

It will not stop here
There are going to be so many cudgels used to normalize what happened to Mahmoud Khalil. The Right recognized opportunities to divide us and claiming he "supports Hamas" is just a pretext for what authoritarians always do: purge anyone who will stand in their way.

It's a well-worn playbook.
