I'm not a huge suburbs supporter, but I have to say they certainly understand snow removal way more than the city. Even the farthest parking spots are spotless at Barracks. Whereas I can't even get home because my street and sidewalks are impassable.

So I'm supposed to have my sidewalk cleared within 24 hours but the city doesn't even have to plow my street once in that time? I don't understand the double standard. #charlottesville

How come I lived in Michigan for 27 years and it wasn't until yesterday I learned about the spray your shovel with WD-40 and the snow won't stick trick?? Worked great.

Beginning Tuesday, December 16, you'll need to create an online account for your car to park in the Market Street and Water Street garages on the Downtown Mall.

would love to straight up close the vehicular crossings on the downtown mall
Bids are now being accepted for the removal and replacement of the brick and granite pavers at the Downtown Mall Crossings on 2nd Street and 4th Street, which will include custom drop inlets, concrete pipes, concrete curbs, and sidewalks. Bids are due on 1/9 and works is scheduled to begin on 2/16.

It finally sold! Been listed for 1.5 years. They tried to flip for close to $1M after a year, but now ended up at the exact same sale price as in 2023.
883 LOCUST AVE, sold on 2025-11-26 for $780,000. Zoned R-A, assessed at $870,100. $307 per square foot. Last sold in 2023 for $780,000.

Does anyone study what percentage of car trips are legal? As in, the driver does not violate the motor vehicle code the entire trip. Or is it just known to be zero percent?

I think this is true (hopefully it's not) but if Charlottesville had set a goal last December of increasing the city's protected bike lanes by at least 1 foot in 2025, they would not be on track to meet that goal.

1. UVA’s (already low) Black enrollment drops 25%.

2. DOJ alleges anti-white discrimination.

3. UVA’s right-wing leadership cuts “deal.” UVA is now legally barred from taking LEGAL steps designed to fix (1).

It was never a “deal.” It was a rigged “negotiation” to freeze these demographics.
An AP analysis finds drops in the number of Black freshmen at many elite colleges in the two years since the Supreme Court’s decision ending affirmative action.

This is harmful not just because it's victim blaming, but that it creates a false equivalence in terms of the responsibility of drivers and pedestrians: "bright clothes, headlights on."

Drivers have *much more* responsibility to keep road users safe! And that includes not speeding.
Hey Marylanders! Darker evenings don’t mean more danger on our roads. Just a little extra caution — bright clothes, headlights on — can make a huge difference.

Let’s keep each other safe. Be the difference!

not my idea, but it’s a very good one and I’m going to start pushing it: the City of Charlottesville should aim to permanently close the Downtown Mall vehicle crossings no later than 8/12/2027.

Presumably, the late notice was an attempt to be strategic and avoid scrutiny? That seems to have backfired as it makes the response urgent and not something to get to later when time frees up (which it never does).
@mtgillikin.bsky.social up. notes how disrespectful the way this proposal was brought up was so disrespectful. spent 15 hours on a holiday weekend getting up to speed on this shit!

The bar is low in Charlottesville, but two new (short, painted) bike lanes are exciting! One at McCormick and University, and the other east on JPA at Brandon.

How come in Charlottesville the time between a public open house to replace a 100 year old water main and tearing up Locust is like 2 weeks, but none of the bike lane projects seem to ever get started?
