This was in 2019-- you still had to use actual money in most stores in Tokyo then.

Unprompted, he turns to me and says "In Japan, people pay with eye scans and the Japanese government stores everyone's DNA." I disagree, he insists, so I tell him "I was there in July, sir. But they do have really fancy toilets." He doesn't understand why I say that.

A 4-panel comic. Annette, our youngest daughter, is now 3 1/2 years old and can now write her own name. (She holds a paper with ANNETTE written on it, looking proud.) Thing is, if she runs out of space on the right, she writes the remaining letters on the left. (She's just finished a drawing that she signed, but the letters read TTEANNE.) She also likes to... enhance her "E"s. She points to an E that has several lines in the middle, and she says "It's a really big E!" On the last panel, she holds up a paper with ANNETTE written on it, so I say "Oh, good job Annette!" but she replies "I wrote 'mommy and daddy'!" to which I say, "No"

"A... freezie?" Then I imagine is it an American word for a popsicle, some other kind of frozen treat? When they say "Yeah", I agree. They then reach into their fanny pack, so I'm surprised and say "Wait, you mean you carry those in your fanny pack??" But then they pull out a zine. I realize. "A FREE ZINE"
