Gradient descent through the infinite library
The place we were in the picture on the right burned down in the Maui fires. Awful.
Take your little kids somewhere tropical and they will just want to hold hands and look at the ocean.

I want the same from my vacations, honestly.

Infinite love for Washington ferry system. There is no better way to travel.

The "punching Nazis" larp on this site is only a faint echo of the unfathomably righteous original.

Opening the What's Hot tab, and here's a friend I haven't spoken to since college! 🙂 Who now has some painfully bad political takes 🥲

I've loved the National for years, but this brutal review of their last three albums is just spot-on.

I want to see more beautiful academic prose in social science. These dry, p-hacked articles are neither fun to read nor useful to anyone.

Good night from Maui, where the waves are warm and the sky is a spectrum of every conceivable color.

For the first time in my life, I have more bookshelves than books.

I predict this won't last long.

This is such an important distinction to make. You can't police all bad thought away from a platform, though with illegal stuff you try.

The ideal end state of this open protocol is a set of strong tools that allow users to easily filter for things that trigger a stress response.
yes I want Nazis communicating with ppl who might be a good influence & persuade them to change their views and I want one Internet running on standard protocols. I also def don't think you or anyone who doesn't want to hear from them should be forced to see any of their content.

It is impossible to ride a ferry across Puget Sound and not feel yourself to be the protagonist in a Wes Anderson film.

Deep orange mid-century interior, nautical gear, and the sea slowly pans past you out the window.

Something beautiful for the timeline:
The Scottish lowlands from the castle ramparts last summer.

30 minutes of sun exposure and exercise and the world feels new. Vibrant. A place of endless branching possibilities.

I respond to the environment as a garden plant does, apparently.

From convergent evolution, many types of crustacean have independently developed a crab-like body.

Did you know the same was true of trees?

We moved into the house in December. In April, the garden blooms with plants we never knew we had.

Looked into the protocol some more and it seems like... It's truly decentralized?

If so, I wonder if the sort of user-hostile features other sites ship won't be a problem here. If you don't like the "show random viral posts" algorithm, simply switch to another!
Eventually, every social network will try and juice engagement numbers by showing more or less random viral content to its users. See Twitter "for you", Instagram "suggested posts", etc.

Good luck opting opting out. It always becomes mandatory.

This is correct and they're off to a great start. But the iron law of social networks is that as you scale the Discourse starts to deteriorate. (Reddit was very good at the beginning, too.)

If this site will succeed it will need strong, native tools for controlling what sort of content you view.
building a permissionless system means you don’t get to control the userbase. but that’s why it’s even more important to carefully plan which users you try to get pmf with first, because they’re the ones who will set the culture (even as it eventually gets diluted in the success case)

After ten minutes on this site, I think I'm bullish on its survival. The post quality is higher than Twitter and there's a decently high network effect already.

And then I guess there's also an AI duck.
