i was homeschooled from 15 to 18 at my request bec i was depressed and bored with hs. my homeschooling consisted of enrolling at community college w a full course load, not my parents teaching. imo it was the best path for me and homeschooling is an important opt-out from an oppressive system

tfw both sides are scary and so you go back and forth voting for the losing side, trying to keep things gridlocked to hold onto the status quo over the dystopias promised by extremists

went to the virginia dmv today- finished in 12 minutes! best dmv experience of my life so far, good job to their appointment system for having every window busy but no line.

i've had this recurring thought- we're lacking a set of primitives an average person would find intuitive to use to describe software features they want.

even just for visual design, code isn't factored in a way that humans can directly nudge w more this / less that to hillclimb to their ideal

while it’s true that a lot more people are going to be able to build their own personalized software, i do not believe that most people are going to *want* to build their own personal software or even have the vision/skill/time to do so effectively
As a software developer who spends his days building a link-saving app and his nights telling everyone that in the very near future people will be able to easily build their own software to solve their personal problems — this is my existential crisis coming to life.

I and @mimi10v3.com have released v1 of the MiniLoom base model writing app. This release now supports chat completions with a dedicated chat UI. It also has Windows, Mac, and Linux executable downloads for non-technical users, no more weird dev stuff just to try loom!

TIL yud gets paid 600k/yr to doom about AI
December 4, 2025 at 12:33 AM
ofc the majority of rich dudes are self made these days, freeing servants to go be more productive led to new wealth creation which imo is a good thing?
rich dudes got freakier after butlers fell out of fashion, like say what you will about having domestic servants but clearly it was some sort of moderating force on old rich dudes having a fancy man follow you around saying shit like "oh dear sir, that wouldn't be very becoming"

is Yud experiencing ai psychosis? he has been on a manic poasting spree for 2 days now... entertaining but out of character?

I have written an omnibus take on AI doom which will ruin my notifications on LessWrong dot com for weeks to come. If you have ever had a question about what exactly it is I believe about this subject this post will probably answer it.

Varieties Of Doom
There has been a lot of talk about "p(doom)" over the last few years. This has always rubbed me the wrong way because "p(doom)" didn't feel like it mapped to any specific belief in my head. In private conversations I'd sometimes give my p(doom) as 12%, with the caveat that "doom" seemed nebulous and conflated between several different concepts. At some point it was decided a p(doom) over 10% makes you a "doomer" because it means what actions you should take with respect to AI are overdetermined. I did not and do not feel that is true. But any time I felt prompted to explain my position I'd find I could explain a little bit of this or that, but not really convey the whole thing. As it turns out doom has a lot of parts, and every part is entangled with every other part so no matter which part you explain you always feel like you're leaving the crucial parts out. Doom is more like an onion than a single event, a distribution over AI outcomes people frequently respond to with the force of the fear of death. Some of these outcomes are less than death and some of them are worse. It is a subconscious(?) seven way motte-and-bailey between these outcomes to create the illusion of deeper agreement about what will happen than actually exists for political purposes. Worse still, these outcomes are not mutually independent but interlocking layers where if you stop believing in one you just shift your feelings of anxiety onto the previous. This is much of why discussion rarely updates people on AI X-Risk, there's a lot of doom to get through.
