Special shout out today to these three, who chose not to go south last fall, and who have somehow made it through multiple -20 to -30 days and nights. They’ve even chased the blue jays away from my feeders. Love every time I see them.

I know it's small in the whole scheme of things, but the bloodbath at NPS in Hawaii is almost certainly going to lead directly to the extinctions of no fewer than 4 native Hawaiian songbirds in the next 4-5 years.

As a long time fan of anglerfish and other creatures like her, there’s something so endearing about the collective empathy shown when we find out an animal that’s been called hideous, terrifying, and a monster turns out to just be a little guy full of big dreams.
