I’m reading “They Called Themselves The KKK” by Susan Bartoletti, and a 1871 quote from Cornelius McBride, a teacher from Mississippi reads “As a general thing, they are an ignorant, illiterate set of men, and they seem determined to keep everybody else the same.”
