I should have known the garden was too perfect when I moved in. Crocuses and daffodils, hyacinths and lilacs, a climbing rose unspooling across the lawn. Wildflowers and dandelions, never once mistaken for weeds.
She tends them constantly, humming to herself. My gardening ghost. My quiet company.

There's an enormous cat who lives a few streets down. She somehow figured out a way to unlatch and open the screen door leading into our bedroom. Every night she breaks into our room, curls up on my chest and falls asleep. I've been adopted by a real-life Miyazaki character.

When I was small, a family friend asked me why I was gazing at my water glass. I pointed at air bubbles in the ice cubes and said they were beautiful. She looked at me with confusion.
