The NIH has made headlines for terminating grants and delaying peer review. But there’s another, less visible way the agency is disrupting science: It’s quietly removing some grant applications from review for the indefinite future. chroni.cl/4leEu8z
The Quiet Way the NIH Is Stalling Some Research Before It Starts
A number of grant proposals have disappeared from scientists’ review pipelines, with little explanation. Applicants are bewildered and frustrated.

I learned this week that you can put our troops' lives in danger, compromise our national security, and violate the Espionage Act. And the government will do nothing.

But if you write an editorial for your school newspaper that Trump doesn't like, you will be abducted on the street and disappeared.

School-based Medicaid programs are vital in ensuring that millions of children, particularly those with disabilities, receive services such as speech therapy, mental health support, and medical assistance.
These funds are a high target for upcoming cuts.
Our students deserve better.

Whenever you hear someone sneer about scientific research that seems useless to them — “they’re studying the spit of lizards?!” — remind them that’s exactly how we got Ozempic.

In 1984, Dr. Daniel Drucker, an endocrinologist from the University of Toronto, discovered a hormone that helped pave the way for popular diabetes drugs such as Ozempic.

Just in case you thought that removing DEI criteria would mean that everyone is competing equally: NIH is removing grad students from underrepresented backgrounds from the applicant pool altogether. Their applications will not be considered. Other students, not from these backgrounds, will be.

The U.S. #NationalWeatherService, housed within #NOAA, is a truly world-class meteorological predictive service, perhaps singularly so. It costs only ~$3/yr per taxpayer, & yields ~10:1 return on investment--saving economy 10s-100s of billions, not to mention thousands of lives.
Hearing reports that Musk’s cronies are targeting NOAA — infiltrating key systems and locking out career employees.

NOAA is vital for weather forecasting, scientific research and more. Their critical work saves lives.

My team and I are looking into this and we will not stand for it.

How much worse will things get re: critical thinking and flexibility in beliefs if the U.S. Dept of Education is gutted/closed?
A frustrating component of many scientists believing “we just need to teach people facts to change their behavior” is an inability to recognize most people don’t think or operate the way scientists do. (Scientists, in theory, are carefully trained to change our minds/views in response to new data).
In brief, this is the idea that if people just KNEW more about the problem, they’d think and act differently. Knowledge ->attitudes -> behavior. This leads to a lot of cries that we need to just “educate people”…
