“These are not normal times in America, and they should not be treated as such. This is our moral moment. This is when the most precious ideas of our country are being tested. … Where does the Constitution live, on paper or in our hearts?”
❗Irony Alert❗Per NYT's Katie Robertson via the Reliable Sources newsletter: The NYT Co. reported quarterly results this morning: The company "added 1.4 million digital-only subscribers in 2025, including about 450,000 in the last quarter of the year.

At The Sporting News, you knew the monetary disadvantages you had against Sports Illustrated and ESPN, among others. We said, "They're the Navy, we're the pirates." It was freeing to try all sorts of crazy, fun things. Heartbroken for Post friends + ex-coworkers.

Sports is a "cultural phenomenon," per WaPo exec editor, who plans to "cover" sports out of the features department. Not: "Hey, how'd the Commanders do today?" but "Hey, who had the best tailgate at the Commanders game today?" What a colossal blunder. News is important, sports is •life•.

Here is what actually happened. A man assaulted the immigrant. After he was arrested, he decided he could make criminal charges go away if he could get the immigrant deported. So he wrote fake letters, posing as the immigrant. And the immigrant was arrested.

always bears repeating that this is NOT a financial decision. jeff bezos is worth over 250 billion dollars. he can afford to lose many millions and never even notice it. this is, at its core, a political and personal decision by bezos to destroy the post
WASHINGTON (AP) — Washington Post says one-third of its staff across all departments, not just the newsroom, is being laid off.

the gutting and silencing of race / identity reporting during these times is incredibly telling. we are the people who study race, who understand how it was created across history as a system of power, but seek to explore how it lives on and inside of us...
Former race and ethnicity reporter for WaPo:

“This wasn't a financial decision, it was an ideological one.”

He also says “hundreds of people” were laid off today, and I’ve seen it reported elsewhere that layoffs affected one third of the staff.

A journalism tale as old as time: "You can't save your way to success." Cut all the staff you want, that doesn't fix the fundamental problem: lack of vision and commitment from the top.
A staggering statement from former Washington Post editor Marty Baron: "This ranks among the darkest days in the history of one of the world's greatest news organizations."

A lot of people cannot just start a paid newsletter or become freelancers to sustain their careers. The sports, metro, and international desks did work that requires *team* resources, like legal checks, documents, access to archives, and long-term beat experience.

STL Burger Club® at Jovick Brothers Burgers this time around, a cool counter-order corner shop on Loughborough in Princeton Heights. Murray's smashburger rating: They smashed it, 20 out of 10 (which seems pretty good. 🤣), with onion rings + Fitz's Cardinal Cream Soda. Great stuff, y'all. #eatlocal

happening this morning in Minneapolis -- ICE agents drawing guns on observers. I reiterate again that it is only a matter of time before DHS kills more innocent people in Minnesota. Congress needs to shut this shit down right now.

Violence is all they have. But violence is a brittle strategy. It will not work in the face of massive peaceful resistance. They cannot shoot all of us and the more they kill, the more resistance will grow. Eventually, politicians will get a spine infusion. Midterms, thank god, are coming soon!

Nice Q&A here re: sports betting and now predictions markets. Be careful with your money, folks. He house never loses. www.niemanlab.org/2026/02/spor...
Sports betting reshaped newsrooms, and it’s “a little gross.” Now, here come the prediction markets
"Sports media is kind of getting bribed," as one former ESPN reporter told journalist Danny Funt.
