Coach Barney in another life. Still teaching people to throw a ball through a hoop.
The halftime show was fun.

This is a beautiful, fitting tribute.

Dan McQuade Got Philly Like No One Else
The writer, who died Wednesday, was one of the most gifted chroniclers of the Philadelphia experience.

Imagine one person teaching a whole city the size of Philadelphia how much joy, love, and strength we could find in laughing at ourselves together. That’s what I will miss the most. Rest in peace, Dan.

start your day with a smile and a laugh. "The international news media" still gets me every time
RIP to Dan. His "A decade of Philly sports fans on the TV news" video from the other site is pure gold.

Last thing about Dan

In a world filled with AI slop & homogenized writing, writers like Dan- an original voice with an infectious curiosity- are needed more than ever

A computer could try for a trillion years to explain in a novel what Dan might capture with one picture or post

You can’t fake it

“Philadelphia Will Do” was my favorite blog

Dan interacting with me on Twitter led to most of you doing the same

Here he is testing different basketballs at Rosemont in 2023

We talked about old practice jerseys often

He prayed for me after my brother passed in 2024

He always made me laugh

Dan McQuade was the lifeblood of Philly writers, a mensch whose gift for writing was only surpassed by his love of his country, Philadelphia. The city will never be the same without him.

Scrolling through Twitter, finding the ancient texts, discovered a quintessential Dan tweet.

Absolutely gutted. Dan was a great writer and about as good a person as I’ve met.

I will miss random text about random basketball artifacts, the joys of shore tshirt culture, and debating the quality of showmanship of coaches on the sideline.

I feel like “Baby turn the lights off” meme is the apex meme. I’ve never seen anything dominate my feed like it’s currently dominating.

I’m still kinda here for it.

Important story, exceptionally well told and researched, that still just scratches the surface of a much deeper problem with higher education (and maybe all education, truly).
For a couple of years now, I've been fascinated with what's happening at small liberal arts colleges, which are running out of money for reasons unrelated to Trump funding cuts. Businessweek let me go deep on the problems, and one college that's trying to blaze a new trail.
Why a College Fighting for Survival Is Slashing Econ and Physics Majors
At Albright in Pennsylvania, the new president is cutting programs, selling art and real estate, and vowing not to hire anyone with tenure. Is this the way forward for liberal arts colleges?

I keep reminding myself that never in my life did I expect a night like the last Super Bowl and that I should just be content forever knowing I received that gift.

As a Catholic I am disappointed in myself after nights like this, as a Philadelphian I am enraged.
