IMMEDIATE ACTION NEEDED: A federal bill (HR 3898) in the House of Representatives proposes nearly 20 provisions that are end-runs around the Clean Water Act to dramatically weaken or remove water quality protections. (1/3)

What do I do if I see an algae bloom? 🦠 Avoid boating, paddling, fishing, or swimming in the area. Some blooms produce toxins that can make you (and your pets) sick.

HAB ALERT: Please be aware of a possible ongoing Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) at Hyde Park Lake, specifically around Duck Island. After sampling the water there yesterday and bringing it back to observe under the microscope, we spotted at least one species of cyanobacteria - Aphanizomenon. (1/4)

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation at Albany has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for Ground Level Ozone until 11 PM EDT this evening. Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index value of 101 for Ground Level Ozone. The Air Quality Index...or AQI...was created as an easy way to correlate levels of different pollutants to one scale. The higher the AQI value...the greater the health concern. When pollution levels are elevated...the New York State Department of Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young and those with pre-existing respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician. For additional information, please visit the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation website at, https://on.ny.gov/nyaqi, or call the Air Quality Hotline at 1 800 5 3 5, 1 3 4 5.

Sampling season started today for our Riverwatch volunteers. They're collecting baseline water data - temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, and conductivity - so we can add to our ongoing understanding of water quality in the region. Learn more about this program below.

GOOD NEWS FROM D.C. - The U.S. Senate reintroduced a bipartisan bill to reauthorize Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) for another 5 years. It has proven to be successful legislation and a source of funding for protecting water quality, habitat, ecosystems and waterfront communities.

Volunteers went to Jayne Park on Cayuga Island to help us plant nearly 200 shrubs and trees for this shoreline protection project. Such great help from our supporters to make long-term improvements for the health of the Niagara River. Thanks again to all!
