Looks like Oxford's AI Chair agrees with @garymarcus.bsky.social on LLMs being a "hack" rather than actual intelligence. Rightly so - and it becomes clearer and clearer throughout academia and even the industry!

Those predicting dramatic short-term economic impacts of AI seem to think that because AI is so powerful, disruptive, and general purpose, it will be adopted rapidly. But wait a second. The more advanced, general-purpose and disruptive a technology is, the more headwinds its adoption faces. 🧵

Essential clarification. Musk is not "saving" one thin dime for any working class American. Any so-called savings is actually stealing civil service jobs, in order to take away essential services and programs from the American people, and putting money into his own pockets & those of other oligarchs
I understand why these stories exist but it’s important to be clear that he’s not “saving” 16 billion, he’s choosing, personally, without oversight, to wipe out 16 billion dollars of government services to veterans and the disabled and food safety etc etc
DOGE says it has saved $55 billion in federal spending so far, but its website only accounts for $16.6 billion of that

My hobby horse. You can simulate a rocket all you want, and use more energy on computation than the actual rocket would, but you won't get to orbit until you ignite rocket fuel. What if all the energy we are spending on simulating learning is not the juice we really need to make intelligence?
