If you have not already seen it or even if you have, see the film “Lincoln.” It demonstrates that history shows we have a capacity for phenomenal meanness, and incredible good. George Pendleton was a foul human being, and Thaddeus Stevens, a righteous man.

I highly recommend director Marie Borsch’s film “Baby Cages,” about the post-war denazification of Hitler Youth. If you think we’re not gonna have to go through this here, you’re mistaken.

Speaking of books, I just bought used copies of the Norton Anthology of English Literature, 1974 edition. These are volumes that I threw away when I graduated 45 years ago. I want to look at them again.

Jean Merrill‘s “The Pushcart War” has been re-issued a number of times in order to keep the story being presented from a future point of view, looking back at the past. The most recent edition has it happening in 2026.
