ukandeu.ac.uk/the-west-and... Stirring read - Bennett rejects the argument that NATO provoked Putin's wars against Ukraine, and argues that the "West has overpromised and under-delivered"
"Only if Ukraine’s 1991 borders are restored can Free Europe rest easy"
An unrealistic aim for Free Europe, alas
The West and Ukraine. A loss of nerve? - UK in a changing Europe
Simon Bennett offers his reflections on the West's approach to supporting Ukraine as it defends itself from the Russian invasion.

This is a policy worth backing
It seeks to deter asylum seekers arriving via an illegal route most voters want to see closed down and to open safe and legal routes which the public will support as long as numbers are controlled
This is not a far-right policy and nor is it racist

MP and human rights lawyer Tony Vaughan leads the opposition of Labour backbenchers to Shabana Mahmood's new asylum policy. The package carries a personal endorsement from Keir Starmer. If a Labour rebellion blocks the changes, Starmer, Mahmood and what's left of Labour's credibility, are finished.

The trouble with listening to either "mutinous" Labour MPs, or voters, is that neither have a plan.

A reply to @owenjones.bsky.social
Starmer has to reinvent himself and his government...That means scrapping commitments about the taxes he wouldn’t raise, scrapping the increases in employers’ NI, and raising income tax. "When all else fails, do the right thing."
Starmer's horrible year
Labour lacks vision, leadership, judgment and discipline. Can anybody put Humpty together again?

The BBC is right to be self-critical and right to apologise to President Trump. But time for a reality check - there is more fake news on Trump's Truth and Social feed in a day than there is on BBC total output in a decade.
November 10, 2025 at 1:54 PM
As senior heads roll at the BBC for disgracefully bad editing of Trump's speeches, claims of systematic bias at the BBC seem misplaced. The BBC attracts few complaints from viewers.

"Bishop" Dewar backs Tommy Robinson
Dewar says: "This nation of ours is under attack! We are at war! We are at war not just with the Muslim, not just with wokeness."
What are the implications of assertive Christian nationalism for other faiths, agnostics, and atheists?
The rise of Christian nationalism in Britain
A new type of Christianity - more militant, more political - is on the rise. But some in the Church of England claim this is a "corruption" of their faith.

Trump rewards Viktor Orban, Putin ally and anti-EU leader who has sacrificed EU funding to pressurise Hungary's judges.
Being kind to Orban means being kind to Putin too, despite Putin confronting Trump over Venezuela, and offering hypersonic missiles to its government.
Trump gives Hungary one-year exemption from Russian energy sanctions
The opt-out comes despite the US increasing pressure on allies to sever economic ties with Russia.

Won't be popular, but pay-per-mile charges for EVs would be a fair way to replace the revenues that are being lost from the transition from petrol and diesel.

They would also help to fill the gap if Reeves decides not to raise fuel duty in the Budget... (1/3)
