Commodore 64 commercials sold themselves on the merit they could teach you computing — and this was true! They were workable machines. Any home computing (Apple,etc) product today can teach you anything that can be loaded into an app. My argument is these devices are no longer working machines.

I have a theory that people actually taken in by LLMs have no idea how computers work. Hey, I’m impressed and in awe from a computer science perspective that it’s come this far. But all I can see in, say ChatGPT, is an infinite Markov chain combined with a chatbot.

I already miss when AI was weird and LLMs weren’t being used to grift everyone. DeepDream was only a decade ago. The process of the neural networks were more obvious. It was fun, it was chaotic, uncanny, strange. It was a dream.
