The pictures were taken on astronomical Samhain in 2023 when I was in Ireland - one is the poignant hand of a bog body found in Clonycavan and the other haws still bright on a rainy day.

Today is astronomical Samhain for 2025. The midpoint between Autumnal Equinox and Winter Solstice. As we feather back through the years, I bet we would find that all of our ancestors paid attention to these days that were marked by the increase or decrease of light.

I put on my great aunt Jessie's carnelian necklace to watch. Jessie started running for office (first, for alderman) on the Socialist ticket before women even had the vote. She kept running as a Socialist for 20 years! How ecstatic she would be about this!! #mayorMamdani #JessieWallaceHughan
