The Massachusetts governor, the city, and the university needs to drop everything to locate and free this girl and make sure this doesn't happen again.

Impossible to overstate the chilling effect on American science. We absolutely depend on scientific exchange with colleagues around the world.
An entirely reasonable and rational response by non-US scientists (and others) will be to stop coming to the US. These sorts of actions will turn the US into a pariah state, where embassies routinely offer warnings about traveler safety.

Every dollar invested into NIH research equates to $2.46 in economic activity. In 2023, NIH funding supported over 400,000 jobs in the U.S. and created nearly $100 billion in economic activity. Cutting public research funding won't save money -- it will cost working people billions of dollars.
