1/8 Malinauskas has misappropriated cultural safety. Cultural safety cannot be invoked without racial literacy or it is a meaningless exercise. Racial literacy requires that BOTH the interpersonal AND structural/systemic nature of racism is examined. Cultural un-safety is a form of racism. #auspol

the greens should have the spine to call this out for what it is. follow the lead of palestinian + jewish voices like @apan4palestine.bsky.social @jewishcouncilau.bsky.social who competently articulate why enabling genocide supporters to capitalise on grief to increase repression is bad, actually.

Labor needs to come back and do it properly, over reasonable timescales. The legislation's own explanatory memo clearly states that advocacy of terrorism and genocide are already covered under the Criminal Code

As the government brings its new hate laws to parliament, it’s worth remembering past attempts suggest legislation used to outlaw political groups have been neither wise nor necessary
Australia’s history of banning political groups gives pause for thought as to whether we really want to go down this route again.
During the first world war, the Unlawful Associations Act 1916 was enacted and used to ban a group called Industrial Workers of the World. Membership was made a criminal offence. Members could also be deported if they were not British subjects born in Australia.
