Extract from sworn affidavit given by Captain Irwin RAMC regarding the death of a Scottish POW. The headstone inscription suggests perhaps his parents had some knowledge of how he died probably from other prisoners.

Reading through testimonies of British POWs about their treatment is grim but fascinating. This man was meant to be giving medical care but instead subjected them to brutal and callous treatment.

I’m convinced the men who fought in the Second World War were made of different stuff.

80 years ago today an American task force broke 60 km through German lines to liberate thousands of men in Stalag IXb near Bad Orb. One of them was my Grandad Sapper George Wood who had been captured 4 years earlier in Crete. Thinking of him and his brave liberators today.

Most people know about Red Cross parcels from WW2. Most of the testimonies I’ve read from POWs credit them with keeping them alive. Millions were distributed between 39-45 but not many realise that without donations from the public they wouldn’t have been available.

Maybe it’s because I’m getting soft in my old age, but this postcard from a POW to his daughter made me feel a bit emotional.

While recently reading through SHAEF files related to POW camps I came across a report on what Allied troops uncovered at Buchenwald. A grim but necessary reminder of a horror that still haunts us. #HMD2025 1/3

#OTD 70 years ago, prisoner of war drama, THE COLDITZ STORY (1955) was released.

Packed with pluck and boys own adventure, it cemented an image of that iconic Oflag that's been repeated ever since, but it's not where that popular image began (or ended)...
