A good example of the dire need for more effective Land Reform policy, but too late for this community 😥
Dr Andy Williamson, chair of the Sleat Community Council, said no-one in the community had known the decision was being made.

But he was not "overly surprised" by the lack of consultation. "The trustees aren't in the community. They're in London and the US,” he said.

Today the Scottish Parliament’s Energy, Transport and Net Zero Committee published its Stage 1 report on the Land Reform Bill

The report includes concerns raised by our co-director Laurie Macfarlane that the Bill falls far short of what is needed to transform Scotland’s land market

Rural areas are often seen as empty spaces available for energy infrastructure at scale. In reality without thriving rural communities a just transition is not possible. Development should be done in partnership with, not to, local communities. Let's not repeat the mistakes of the past...
Across much of Scotland there are significant new wind farm developments, happening and planned. There is a Wind Rush, with huge wealth extraction by distant financiers and investors. We do need to decarbonise energy and economy, but we need a firmer strategy, and less free for all. 1/2

In this report, we outline an ambitious agenda to diversify land ownership, tackle the housing crisis and deliver a just transition.
