They killed your kindness. |
Now you have me forever |
in the sharp darkness.
#haiku #horrorhaiku #horrorwriterschat
An all-encompassing emptiness consumes me as I look back at the carnage. I did this? This isn't who I am.

I rake a bloodied hand through my hair. No, it's exactly who I am. How many times did I take the high road as they stole everything from me? I regret nothing.

#HorrorWritersChat
Gnarled hands grasp the thrumming earth around you. Void-coloured eyes behold you.

“Embrace me, and my power, you shall have.”

You grasp the dagger in the skull. You do not waver.

“They killed your kindness,” your darkness whispered. “And now, all you have is me.” Continue it.

I'm thinking of mad scientist Dr Lee, who appears in my Micky Crow series and Fat Monster. He doesn't think he's bad. He's curious and brave and willing to do what other scientists won't do. Everyone is the hero of their own story in their own head, remember. #horrorwriterschat
All the abuse. All the manipulation. All the tyranny. Blistering scabs on your soul. Your breaths rumble in the mound.

Your eyes lock with the god in front of you.

How changed do your characters become if they embrace their darkest parts? Do things change around them?

In my #WIP Leet-Z, the MC Leigh acknowledges that she is responsible for at least part of her disease (Microplastosis Cachexia, the "plastic curse"), a future #cyberpunk wasting disease of #microplastics, yet she continues to use plastic. #horrorwriterschat
You lob the sack onto the slab. The human spills out of it – battered and broken, your dagger lodged in their skull still.

Their face. You remember everything they’ve done.

The eyes glimmer at your contempt.

What are your characters’ darkest parts? Do they embrace them?

I'm Bert. I write all flavors of #horror. And I am #neurodivergent which makes me seem cold, dark, and freaky to regular people. I don't have a proper filter and I think things and then say them and apparently they are inappropriate? 🤷🏻 #horrorwriterschat
The mound’s warm innards thrum as you descend. A huge, stone slab is ahead, shining with portent.

Eyes, older than words, behold you from the darkness. A question emerges.

Tell us who you are, what do you write, and what part of yourself do you consider the darkest?

Oh, for sure Becca from Fat Monster would hate International Granola Day (the ones from the Mickey Crow series would adore it). WTF is granola, is that even FOOD? I bet it's squirrel food, that's why it's the same day as International Squirrel Day. #horrorwriterschat #scaryfood #eatingdisorders
I LOVE these days being subverted. You're all in sweatpant heaven. What about your WIP characters? your main characters? And what would they say?

I'm Nash and I twist the ordinary into something worth writing about.

My fave Int. Day is the World Naked Gardening Day because silly and delightful things need to be cherished.

Q1.
For me this is the most important. Who are we, really?
Let's spill the beans. Or the squirrels. Or even the granola.
We're all listening.

Yay! I got to write a #haiku this week!
So we have four days today...or was it five? SUCH a busy day...

International Squirrel Appreciation Day
National Hugging Day
International Playdate Day
International Sweatpants Day
National Granola Bar Day

So which one will you choose to make horror? I know you can....

I remain Bert. I write all kinds of horror and horrible things. My favorite international holiday is Talk Like a Pirate Day, which is September 19 every year. ARRR. 🏴‍☠️ 🦜 #horrorwriterschat #talklikeapirateday

In my WIP, there is an ancient mummy curse (or is there?) and a bitchy lead archaeologist.

In my last published work, Fat Monster, Becca faces humans who hate her for being fat and monsters who love her for the same reason.
#horrorwriterschat
Horror is known for having both natural and supernatural antagonists, like the landscape or a ghostly presence.

Q4 #HorrorWritersChat

In your current WIP or latest published horror work, who or what antagonises your protagonist?

The outro with promo opportunity will be posted in 10 mins.

I aim to describe everything very matter-of-factly. The guy had blue eyes. The guy had one eye. The guy had one eye hanging out of his face. At 3 p.m. the raptors started eating his eyes. #horrorwriterschat
Q3 #HorrorWritersChat

How does your writing style seek to instill fear, disgust, or otherwise unsettle your readers?

Human-shaped things are human. "If not people, why people-shaped?" #horrorwriterschat #mimics #shapechangers #shoggoths
“Horror comes from a violation of what characters perceive to be reality.” - Writing in the Dark by Tim Waggoner

Example: a haunted house violates the assumption that we are alone in our homes.

Q2 #HorrorWritersChat
Which perceived realities do you utilise in your horror writing?
January 14, 2026 at 7:32 PM
I'm Bert, I write all kinds of horror. My WIP is influenced by Gary Jenning's Aztec, the discovery of King Tut's tomb, and mummy curses in general. #horrorwriterschat

Introduce yourself and the horror subgenres you write.

Then, share three works of horror that influenced your latest work OR current WIP.

My newest novel is the award-winning winning FAT MONSTER wherein fat people are preyed on by society and by monsters: body horror, multi-level- marketing schemes, fungus/mushroom creatures, pyramids...

My characters don't usually physically change ... unless they are turning into something ... which would be a surprise to everyone (reader, writer, character ... )
#horrorwriterschat
You spring out of your den, gliding between trees. You follow the winged figures. Your kin. Your home.

Your past has left its icy trails behind.

Becoming a new self also often includes a physical transformation. Do your characters change physically? In what way?

They sacrifice their old life and their innocence of how the world really is, to live in the real world and all its ugliness and pain.
#horrorwriterschat
The susurrus sharpens into a voice. Your voice. A human rumble deepened by the forest’s savagery bursts from your maw.

A question blazes in your mind.

Becoming a new self is laden with sacrifices. What do your characters sacrifice? How painful/significant is it?

#HorrorWritersChat
January 7, 2026 at 7:51 PM
Not sure I understand the question, although it's lovely. I wish I could say my characters become the best versions of themselves, but this is horror, so they become the only version of themselves that they can, to survive whatever I throw at them. #horrorwriterschat
The figures bury you in frozen earth, in chains of pine needle and bone. Golden eyes fuse into a singular pair.

The soil trembles with a question.

For characters to survive the horrors, they must often become new selves. What kind of new selves do YOUR characters become?
