🌍 1/ Ten years after the Paris Agreement, the #EU and #China remain committed to climate action.

Today we renewed that commitment with a #jointstatement, a meaningful step in a world facing growing geopolitical tensions and climate risks.

Climate & energy elements in China's new government work report are all but promising. China remains off track for many key 2025 targets. The low fossil fuel intensity target & no mention of the carbon intensity target show a a lack of government focus on reducing emissions
China sets a target of reducing fossil fuel consumption per unit of GDP by "around 3%". This is not strong at all, possibly allowing CO2 emissions to increase by more than 2% this year. I don't think they will, but shows the government is not prioritizing controlling CO2 emissions at the moment.
❗️FULL text of the 2025 China Government Work Report is published online
www.npc.gov.cn/jzzqw/jzzq/c...

-GDP growth of around 5 percent
-a drop of around 3 percent in energy consumption per unit of GDP

Note this is the version on 5 March. A final version will be released by Xinhua #TwoSessions

New from us: clean energy technologies contributed more than 10% of China’s GDP in 2024 for the first time ever, with sales and investments worth $1.9tn.

Clean energy sectors drove a quarter of the country’s GDP growth and have overtaken real estate sales in value.

NEW from me: Record surge of clean energy in 2024 halts China's CO2 rise. Emissions have plateaued since March last year. 🧵on China's emissions trends in 2024 AND 2025 👇
🇨🇳 NEW | Analysis: China's CO2 emissions up by est. 0.8% year-on-year in 2024 - but lower than 12 months up to Feb. 2024

🌿Clean energy kept China’s CO2 emissions below previous year across last 10 months of 2024

NEW from me: Half of all China’s exports of solar and wind power equipment and electric vehicles (EVs) now go to the Global South. Emerging and developing countries have driven most of the recent growth in export volumes.
