Mum of two, moving back home to Belfast after 15 yrs in 🇧🇪. Trying to use the car as little as possible!

Convinced Belfast has so much more potential for safe (and fun) cycling 🚴‍♀️

I'd like to ride my bike more often and wish it felt safer.

"According to the new study, bike production has ballooned over the last 60 years. 123 million bikes were produced in 2015 - up from 20.7 million bikes in 1962."
“Dutch people cycle an average of 2.6km each per day. If this pattern was replicated worldwide, annual carbon emissions would drop by 686 million tonnes.

This mammoth figure exceeds the entire carbon footprint of most countries, including the UK, Canada, Saudi Arabia and Australia.” @euronews.com
Cycling like the Dutch would slash the world’s carbon footprint
If everybody cycled like the Dutch, we could offset the UK or Australia’s entire carbon footprint.

Bike-lanes don’t cause traffic congestion.

Car dependency, dumb land-use sprawl, too many (& bigger) cars being driven too much taking up too much space, highly subsidized driving costs, and not enough choices in how to get around, ALL cause traffic congestion.

Think about it. THAT’S common sense.

‘Why are we not promoting free parking every Saturday of the year?’ 🤦🏻‍♀️

Wish politicians here put as much effort into improving our public transport or cycle infrastructure as they do promoting permanent traffic

Christmas car parking "confusion" could see motorists out of pocket
"I find it hard to stomach that if we had gone to RingGo a few weeks ago we could have had things sorted, we should know the terms and conditions, they are our car parks."

We ask everyone outside of the car to be safe so that drivers can be dangerous.

Pavement parking is ubiquitous in #Belfast (👏 city planners) but the utter selfishness of some drivers still manages to shock me.

My 6 year old just about managed to squeeze past this one but if I had a pram? Or a wheelchair? I’d be on the road at rush hour, put in danger so someone can park 😒

If you’re not going to put in actual cycling infrastructure, the least you could do is enforce the constant and multiple illegal parked cars on the painted cycle lane…

This is not a one off either…

For cars in Ireland: build and they will come.
For bikes: build something, tick a box.

In my latest Substack, I look at Dublin’s new cycle routes and why "better than nothing" is not nearly good enough!

If we built for bikes the way we build for cars, Ireland would be transformed.

And if I was pushing a pram or my child used a wheelchair?

Walking in #Belfast is as difficult and depressing as #cyclinginbelfast sometimes.

Cities need smart strategies to manage vehicle size. NOT bigger parking space requirements.

We risk leaving toxic legacy for our kids unless we urgently deal with Lough Neagh crisis unfolding in plain sight

Second week #cyclinginbelfast: new investment required: helmet cam 😵‍💫
First week #cyclinginBelfast down ✅

🚲 Did a little bit of the Comber Greenway - beaut!
🚲 Biked from Belfast ➡️ Holywood, less beaut 😬
🚲 Had our 1st #criticalmassbelfast - loved!
🚲 Did the big shop with just the bikes - surprisingly doable.

Just need to invest in some waterproof clothes now 😅

Trigger warning.

“In crashes, SUVs are more likely to strike vital organs in the core of adults’ bodies & heads of children. Hitting pedestrians above their center of gravity means they’re more likely to be knocked forward & down and then be driven over.”

Plus more likely to hit in the 1st place.

Nearly 2000 speeding offences in just a 3 day period. Sure, we can educate drivers (again) but the road designs here too often do nothing to slow people down.

Pretty shocking to see the speeds of some in really built up areas 😞
It was one of seven incidents when drivers were caught driving over 100mph
Vehicle detected going over 100mph twice on the same day
