The prevalence of ultra short baseline acoustic position systems, also known as USBLs 🔊, is understudied in #EuropeanWaters and its effect on marine mammals 🐋, such as the #harbourPorpoise, is mostly unknown. These systems are used in #geophysicalSurveys and during #trawling fishing activities. 🧵1/6

New study out!! 25 years of harbour porpoise tracking data shows a decline in overlap between habitat suitability and the location of MPAs across the North Sea–Baltic Sea transition zone. Relevant info for the design of future MPAs under the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030!

as we advance further into data aggregation methods for pushing scientific questions forward, it’s important we wrestle with the development of structures that support transparent, accessible and reliable data. 🧪👩🔬🌎

Improper data practices erode the quality of global ecological databases and impede the progress of ecological research
With big data comes big responsibilities, and best practices for how data are contributed to databases have not kept pace with the collection, aggregation, and analysis of big data. We rigorously ass...
