January 2025 I made four wines, this is the best of the four. Rhubarb. It’s still in the carboy but I guess it’s about time to bottle.

Honk, honk. I’m goose… and duck bathing in Narrows Creek. The creek is at the edge of our two-acre aronia yard where we live. Winter approaches but we love to swim, nibble green grass, and tell stories to anyone who will listen. Honk, honk!

This week was filled with new babies. Rudolph, Donner, and Black Baldy, bull calves with gentle mama's.

It was a busy week. Maple syrup weather begins on Sunday, so Saturday I’ll be tapping maple trees. Maple syrup weather begins in late winter when it warms above freezing in the day and below freezing at night causing sap to draw up the tree at night. Day: Expanding pressure forces sap out tap hole.

I was concerned about the ginger I bought from Woodman’s as it was so clean and fresh looking but it must have just had any old skin washed away. It has scarred over a light tan and is sending out buds. A little mold forming in an open wound. I’ll clean that up. It appears ready to plant.

I finally bought a round bale feeder for the cattle. It's made of polypropylene pipe. The metal ones available lately do not last but these are supposed to be more durable. Yesterday I hauled 20 large round bales home that I bought at auction to stretch my winter feed supply.

I had a painting commissioned. Some say it captures the real me? Ehh… maybe my patronus?

They gathered at the garden gate,
Guest of honor running late.
Groundhog must be sleeping in,
Future weather depends on him.
With that, they looked all around,
But no shadow could be found.
Must be an early spring, they say;
Promised warmth is on the way!

As she flew, Crow found it hard to see the way sometimes.
She couldn’t help but worry, but she always reminded herself she’d find her way eventually.
She knew she just had to go as far as she could see, then, when she got there, she’d be able to see further.

Bebe arrived on the farm the 28th of December. I’m ‘fostering’ her. My goal is to train her as a farm guardian dog. I have a really good guardian, Barkley. He’s nine years old. He’s supposed to be helping train but seems completely aloof toward this novice at the moment.

I finished setting up a second chicken coop. My Brahmas are 28 weeks old and have started laying eggs. I have light, buff, and dark Brahmas and will have them confined to separate areas for hatching season starting around Valentine’s Day.

Winter has yet to begin in Wisconsin, but it's time to start thinking about the garden in 2025. Around Christmas is when I like to start my turmeric and ginger plants. I begin buying grocery store roots and cover with soil in a warm place. In a few weeks, new shoots grow.

The light Brahma chickens have been separated from the flock and moved to their private honeymoon suite. Henry, with the less-black neckless, and his three girls. Egg production should start between now and February and spring chicks to follow.

I’m going to order seeds early this year and plan my garden as if the world has lost its mind by harvest. I predict nothing. Our nation and world has been through some things in 2024…I have an uneasy feeling about what may come. If wrong? I might have a lot of extra produce!

Janice was quite surprised by my magic trick but Walter was like, “I know what you just did”!

Someone gave me a tree that had blown over in their field. I picked it up a couple years ago and started sawing it into lumber yesterday. So far I’ve gotten 60 2x4s and a bunch of live edge slabs out of the first log…I think it had four logs so I’ve got three more to go. They are beasts!

Some are Brahma chickens. The white ones strut around in their white bell bottoms looking like Elvis impersonators!

I’m sewing together netting to make a large covering for the raspberry yard out of 6.5 foot wide rolls of very fine net. Also, I started spraying with erythritol. It’s just a sugar substitute but it is alleged to make SWD females sterile! Only one spray so far and it did not work yet.

Raspberry bushes are doing great but I have a visitor, the Spotted Wing Drosophila. SWD has ruined the harvest so far but I’m working on it….
