A bit of news: The Chicago Tribune has deemed the post of film critic non-essential, and therefore zeroed-out that post. My options were to take a newsroom reassignment to be named later, or a buyout to be taken more or less immediately. So...(1/3)

Make your Sunday better with Ella and Mel swapping fours. In the same octaves. We rightly worship Ella, but why do we often forget what a freakin incredible singer Mel Tormé was, too?
Wanna see something cool?

At the Grammy's in 1976, Ella Fitzgerald and Mel Torme explained what jazz is.

The result? The crowd losing its mind. 🔥

One of the greatest comebacks in NCAA basketball history was led last night by Kelvin Sampson, a member of the Lumbee, an Indigenous and Black North Carolina tribe. His father helped fight off the Klan in the Battle of Hayes Pond. He’s the first Native coach to ever go to Final Four. DEI, baby! ✊🏽

Yesterday, 1,400 protests were held to protest the Trump whose headlines fill this page. But to the #BrokenTimes this morning, they are a buried BTW. It has plenty of photos; none here. This is what they call "news judgment." To the Times, we are not news.

The Trump Administration Accidentally Texted Me Its War Plans
U.S. national-security leaders included me in a group chat about upcoming military strikes in Yemen. I didn’t think it could be real. Then the bombs started falling.

Remember Threads? The once promising "Twitter killer" launched with fanfare. But Meta's bewildering decisions and antagonistic relationship with users alienated those it needed most. Now it feels like no one is really hanging out there. My column for @status.news www.status.news/p/threads-en...
Hanging by a Thread
Meta’s decisions at the once promising “Twitter killer” serve as a cautionary tale about the risks of prioritizing corporate interests and political appeasement over user trust.

Flu is surging nationwide, with 24 million cases so far.
A hospital epidemiologist in NY attributed the increase to “fewer people wearing masks, a less effective influenza vaccine this year and fewer mitigation strategies such as people social distancing and staying home when a person is sick.”
