As I discussed in Talking Climate last year, research shows a four-day work week boosts productivity and well-being — AND cuts carbon! One study, for example, found a 10% drop in hours = 8.6% drop in emissions. So Jack's question below is a good one: why aren't we advocating for this more?

That said, in 50 BC the Romans did have a problem, which was ultra-wealthy demagogic elites tearing about their Republic in the single-minded pursuit of power and dominance, which would eventually lead to the republic's collapse and its replacement with a less agile monarchy in 31BC.

Tl;dr: Rome matters because we keep choosing to make it matter, because we keep using it as a reference point for power.

We will keep contesting competing interpretations of Rome because we think "the right one" equates to power and legitimate authority.

In recent decades, references to Rome in British right-wing discourse have tended to be a dog-whistle for Powellite racism. Now it seems they’re just a means of trying to suck up to Elon Musk.

Lucius Mummius is often overlooked in Roman history, yet his actions reshaped the ancient world. The Butcher of Corinth. The man who crushed the Achaean League. Some debate whether he formally made Achaea a province, but he unquestionably ended Greek resistance. 🧵

I am a writer of historical fiction focusing on ancient Rome. As a classicist, I believe we have a duty to make the ancient world engaging and relevant to the modern day.
