I was today years old when I learned that Virgil Finlay did illustrations for Larry Niven’s The Adults in Galaxy in 1967, which became the basis for Protector!

This brilliant person made a Wing Commander SNES viewer (it’s further up in the thread) and it led to a pretty cool discovery!
or not, turns out you just have to fly in one direction for an incredibly long time... i wonder if this exists in the DOS version, lol
