While many birds are just starting to think about spring, Great Horned Owls are already nesting. Females incubate eggs in mid/late winter, often reusing old hawk, crow, or heron nests. By late winter, fluffy white owlets peek over the edge completely dependent on both parents for warmth and food.

Franzi Schimmer captured this Grizzly bear in Brooks Falls, Alaska just floating along, tippy-tapping down the river, browsing the salmon.

Prior to hibernation, up to 40% of a bear's body mass is fat, which is less dense than water (~0.9 g/cm^2), so the murder-monster is also a floaty-boaty.

Today is #westernmonarchday. Western Monarchs need our help.
This winter, the count of Western monarch butterflies along the California coast was the third-lowest since 1997. “Our window for action is narrowing, and our conservation efforts must accelerate.”

One way to help: Plant more native milkweed. www.latimes.com/environment/...
West Coast monarch butterfly populations hit historic low. This may be the 'new normal'
The latest count of western monarch butterfly populations is the third-lowest yet, after 2024 and 2020.

Coyote Mint-such a great plant. Can withstand high heat (116 degrees during heat dome!) with no water. Great for pollinators.

Want a native to fill a small space in full sun? Want it to bloom a long time and smell amazing? Consider Coyote Mint! It blooms all summer-fall, smells like a desert mint (yummy!), is evergreen, and is a bee powerhouse!

Wildflower spotlight! Riverbank Lupine is a big beautiful West Coast native. It's a very showy evergreen, an excellent ground cover/weed suppressor, and nitrogen fixing! It generally grows more like a biennial and self sows easily!

Heard one singing yesterday!
🪶House Finches don't get a lot of ❤️ because they're common, but these familiar birds have a cheery song (listen to video below) that you'll start hearing a lot more soon. Male House Finches sing year-round, but not as much from Oct to Feb. We're starting to hear them sing again when the ☀️ shines.

Greenland PM Jens-Frederik Nielsen:

"If we have to choose between the US & Denmark here and now, we choose Denmark. We choose NATO. We choose the Kingdom of Denmark. We choose the EU."

"Greenland does not want to be owned by the US. Greenland does not want to be governed by the US" he later added.
