Had a great time at GSA with the geo community! But I definitely need to clarify that I have not been director of (or active in) the IAGD @accessiblegeo.bsky.social since January. The current executive committee can help with info, networking, and connecting with the org.

We are excited to bring back GeoSPACE in it's full version - complete with virtual participation option for summer 2026. Content focus is planetary, volcanology and basic field geology. Come hang with the cool kids next summer!
The application window for GeoSPACE 2026 is now open! Join us online or in-person in Arizona for a two-week planetary geology field camp through @ufgeology.bsky.social. Open to geo-gators as well as visitors from other schools. If you are looking for an accessible field camp, check us out! ⚒️

Coming of a long pause in posting to thank the colleagues and former students that nominated @geospace-field.bsky.social at @ufgeology.bsky.social for this award, it really means a lot. And huge thanks always to my amazing team of GeoSPACE collaborators that contribute so much to this project ❤️
Exciting Announcement: Our program is the 2025 winner of the @agu.org Award for Advancing Inclusive Excellence in STEM! We are so thankful to our peers and former students that nominated us for creating geoscience field training opportunities for all ⚒️🌎♿

Abstracts are due July 30th!

Please consider submitting to our “Indigenous Science to Action” session- I’ve had the distinct pleasure being part of this session since 2019, of working and meeting with both Indigenous and Indigenous allied scholars.

Should #lpi and #usra restore all censored abstracts? Should they commit to preserving scientific freedom of speech at #lpsc? And should they commit to not censoring #lpsc2026 submissions?

If the answer is yes, then sign this petition!

One week ago, I got to witness an eruption at Kilauea Halemaʻumaʻu crater. The fire fountain was hundreds of feet tall, it was incredible! I am just getting around to playing with my photos from that night, so enjoy this belated look at eruption #11 in the 2025 sequence 😍🌋

Heading home from a wonderful seminar visit to U of Hawaii Hilo and Manoa. Saw humpback whales, sea turtles, amazing landscapes and one of my bucket list natural wonders- a fire fountain!! Thanks Kilauea (episode 11 on 2/25/25 for the volcano nerds who want to know) 🤩

We just hit our 50 donor target, thank you all so much - I recognized many familiar names on the donor list! February 20 is the finale of this fundraiser so it's not too late to chip in. More funds means we can accept more students, and I am so grateful for everyone's support!
Geo-community: GeoSPACE needs your help. It costs about $2,500 per student to run this accessible field course and many of our students simply can't afford that. Bonus points if you donate this week and help us unlock a donor pledge with 50 donations of any size. Thank you in advance!!

Update: UF has decided my work is exempt from the DEIA ban as long as it focuses on research and doesn't "stray into advocacy". I'm happy I can move forward, but feel like I'm moving forward on a tightrope.

Just a reminder folks, this earthquake data comes from the USGS. The tsunami information comes from NWS. The educational information comes from EarthScope.

ALL FEDERALLY FUNDED.

These are your tax dollars at work for the public good.

Every single one of my grants is likely to get pulled out of consideration if this is true. I had millions of dollars of potential funding wrapped up into these opportunities, wasted potential for students in Hawai‘i.
🚨BREAKING. From a program officer at the National Science Foundation, a list of keywords that can cause a grant to be pulled. I will be sharing screenshots of these keywords along with a decision tree. Please share widely. This is a crisis for academic freedom & science.

Worried about losing access to US federal data that may go off-line, or already is? You’re not alone—but duplication isn’t the answer.

Many ongoing efforts have already archived key datasets and many more are ongoing. Check out these existing resources and, if you can, support their work. 🧵
