One week ago, I got to witness an eruption at Kilauea Halemaʻumaʻu crater. The fire fountain was hundreds of feet tall, it was incredible! I am just getting around to playing with my photos from that night, so enjoy this belated look at eruption #11 in the 2025 sequence 😍🌋

Heading home from a wonderful seminar visit to U of Hawaii Hilo and Manoa. Saw humpback whales, sea turtles, amazing landscapes and one of my bucket list natural wonders- a fire fountain!! Thanks Kilauea (episode 11 on 2/25/25 for the volcano nerds who want to know) 🤩

There are plenty of awful things happening in the world right now, but I got a nose boop from a little manatee yesterday and I'm gonna coast on that happy feeling all week 😊

I saw folks posting favorite images from 2024, so here goes! These two photos of the total eclipse were taken at a Choctaw viewing event at Wheelock Academy - the boarding school my great granny attended. There was something poetic about seeing the sun burst out from the eclipse over that place!

We tried for sunrise photos this morning at Driftwood Beach while visiting family in coastal Georgia. Socked in with fog and we never did see the sun, but got some interesting moody shots anyway.

Take-away #2: Sustainability is rarely emphasize in field courses. But frequently-used sites are being degraded. Think about what your field location will look like in 5, 10, or 50 years from now if everyone used the site the way your group does?

While the volcanologist in me was a little disappointed to not red rivers of lava, this eruption was very close to The edge of a town (Grindavik) and I'm sure the folks that live there are relieved to see this eruption fizzle out!

Activity has really diminished, but I got to see rock that are 0 days old and still molten in places! Very cool 🌋

I'm scared of flying but I put on my big girl pants and tooka helicopter ride to the eruption site! Here's me trying (unsuccessfully) to look just after takeoff 😅
