✨book update✨ I won an IPPY, which means I am equally parts humbled, shocked, and so excited that I will finally have a real-life gold medal I can wear nonchalantly in the privacy of my home.

Forever grateful to @univnebpress.bsky.social and @court8961.bsky.social for making this book a reality.

Been out for a minute, but came back to celebrate the launch of my FIRST BOOK (Thank You for Staying with Me, @univnebpress.bsky.social), an amazing AWP, and a lovely conversation regarding maternal health with Jennie Case over at @oxfordamerican.bsky.social.

One of the highlights of AWP: hearing @baileygaylinmoore.bsky.social read from her new book of essays, and friends @jacqdoyle.bsky.social and @gfaulknerwriter.bsky.social read from Past Ten's anthology. Today, I returned to my own Past Ten essay -- feeling proud!

For someone to slow down and read your book and to feel a connection with you, it's kind of ineffable how that makes you feel. It's overwhelming and it's super humbling.

Oh, Aarik—thank you so much for reading with such tenderness and care. Our home is complicated, beautiful, and hard. I appreciate you ❤️
So many reasons why I'm loving @baileygaylinmoore.bsky.social book Thank You For Staying With Me, not least of which the ways in which Bailey describes a kindred love of Missouri, with all the weight and complication that attaches to loving a place that doesn't always love (or yours) back.

My upcoming collection has a section navigating how to mourn a nation, written between 2016-2020. After Biden took office, I worried these essays had become dated and struggled with whether I should include them in the book. Unfortunately, my biggest fear happened: the essays became relevant again.
