Most books & articles will tell you that the early MiG-23s had poor handling at high angles of attack (AoA), limiting manoeuvrability, and that the MiG-23MLD improved this by, among other things, the addition of dog-tooth vortex generators at the wing-root.

Bulgarian MiG-23MLD (изд. 23-18A), ex-Soviet изд. 23-18, five of these were delivered in 1992 (two of which were used in Afghanistan with the 168th IAP) and flew until 1998 at Dobroslavtsi AFB. There was to be a sixth but it was lost during the ferry flight. Overhauled at 112th ARZ Kubinka.
